Building a global accelerator physics community

For over 40 years, the CERN Accelerator School has been assembling and disseminating knowledge on accelerator physics and technology. Today, our LinkedIn platform serves as the digital extension of our educational mission, providing our 10,000-strong community with comprehensive resources that reflect our commitment to advancing accelerator physics education worldwide.

CAS delivers world-class training programs that we showcase through our digital channels:

  • Introductory courses that offer comprehensive knowledge of accelerator physics and technology are frequently provided in intensive formats across CERN's member and associate member states.
  • Advanced courses featuring challenging, hands-on laboratory experiences with collaboration of leading institutions like CERN, GSI, and DESY.
  • Topical courses covering specialised subjects in depth, from RF -radiofrequency systems- to superconducting magnets and intensity limitations.

We take pride in sharing the complexity of our course logistics - such as transporting over two tons of equipment or acquiring liquid nitrogen to create authentic hands-on learning environments where participants can hear vector network analysers, manipulate superconducting magnets and see oscilloscope traces across multiple screens, for example. We currently organise four courses per year in different locations worldwide. The course pattern is typically planned three years in advance. The actual planning is always displayed on the homepage of the school.

Our international reach extends far beyond CERN’s boundaries. Through LinkedIn, we celebrate the diversity of our participants:

  • 32 nationalities are represented at our ongoing school in Spain, demonstrating the global appetite for accelerator physics education.
  • Alumni career progression updates as former students advance to leadership positions at major laboratories and institutions worldwide.
  • Cross-institutional collaborations highlight partnerships between CERN and universities, national laboratories, and private companies.
  • Professional networking opportunities that extend well beyond our residential courses are facilitated through our digital community.

CAS maintains one of the most comprehensive libraries of accelerator physics education materials globally and continues growing:

We actively support career advancement within the accelerator physics community with our LinkedIn account interacting and publishing content about:

  • Job announcements from partner institutions seeking CAS-trained professionals across academia, national laboratories, and industry.
  • Fellowship opportunities at leading research facilities worldwide, often specifically targeting CAS alumni.
  • Professional development pathways showing how our educational programs lead to impactful careers in accelerator science.
  • Industry partnerships connecting our graduates with opportunities in medical accelerators, industrial applications, and emerging technologies.

Our LinkedIn strategy reflects the interactive learning approach that has defined CAS since our inception.

Our commitment to knowledge dissemination extends seamlessly from our residential courses to our digital community, maintaining the same standards of excellence that have defined CAS for four decades.
