Mechanical Materials Engineering for Particle Accelerators and Detectors, 2 November - 14 November 2020, Sint-Michielsgestel, Holland

In collaboration with NIKHEF (National Institute for subatomic physics in the Netherlands) the CERN Accelerator school is organizing a topical course on:

Mechanical Engineering for Accelerators

For the first time in the history of the CERN Accelerator School, a course on Mechanical engineering is organized. The focus of the course will be to orient mechanical engineers from their general knowledge obtained during their past education to techniques and solutions, which are specific for accelerator applications. In the mornings, a complete lecture program is foreseen covering a wide range of mechanical engineering aspects. These lectures are complemented by a series of application reports in the field of accelerators. In the afternoons four blocks of so-called “hands-ON” experiments are foreseen, during which the students will be guided to do practical work including visits of professional companies close by. Since a student without prior knowledge of mechanical engineering will not be able to follow the course, we have prepared a self-evaluation test on our website. We kindly ask every interested student to exercise this test and apply only for the course, if a sufficient high score is obtained in the test.

FUNDING GRANTS

There will be a limited number of grants available for this school.  These will be awarded to applicants who have difficulty in finding funding (rather than on merit) and who would otherwise be unable to attend the school. The grants will be distributed equally throughout all nationalities. The grant covers board, lodging and all social events but does NOT cover travel expenses. (Only one registration is allowed, if you register as a standard participant, your registration for funding grant requests will be automatically removed)

FEES & PAYMENT

The fee covers the accommodation, breakfasts, lunches, coffee breaks, from Monday afternoon 2 November to Sunday 14 November before noon, as well as all organized social events (banquet, excursion, movie night). It does NOT include travel expenses

The latest one month before the course starting date we will inform all registered students if the course will take place or not. Only after this date we will proceed with payment requests and with the organization of transport. Still we encourage all interested students to register now, since the total count of interested students is important for us.

ONLY if you have received an acceptance Letter, you will be required to pay the Registration fee in October if the school is maintained.

  • Single room at 2700 CHF per person
  • Shared twin room at 2200 CHF per person
  • Local student at 1100 CHF (This includes all services offered to the other students except a room, breakfast and evening meal and all social events)

FEES & PAYMENT for CERN Participants

ONLY if your participation is validated by your CERN Department Head

  • Single room at 2700 CHF per person (including 500.- to be paid by yourself)
  • Shared twin room at 2200 CHF per person

The cost of each participant is covered by his Department and/or Group budget for a shared room accommodation only. If a participant wants a single room, he has to transfer an extra amount 500 CHF to CAS by himself directly to the bank account, which is indicated in the invitation letter.

Travel for participants is organized by the relevant secretariats (according to the rules of each Department). Shuttles will be organised for flights arriving between 10 AM and 06 PM and for flights leaving on the departure day after 10 AM.

Local travel expenses in Geneva to the airport, such as taxis, public transport or parking fees at the airport will not be reimbursed, since there is a well working CERN bus shuttle.

Payment of the registration fee is done via a global TID, issued by the Department Head secretariat. The supplier (creditor) budget code is provided by the CAS Secretariat.

No extra subsistence shall be provided as the registration fee covers the full board accommodation, coffee/tea breaks and all social events.

Whether or not you need a visa depends on your nationality and the country in which the school will be held. If you are not sure that you have the right to travel to the country in question, we suggest that you contact an embassy of your country of nationality, or a similar authority.

If you are selected and need a VISA, please contact ASAP the CAS Secretariat (Accelerator.school@cern.ch), who will give you the contact email address of our local organizer in order to receive the invitation letter.

Shuttles will be organised from the Amsterdam Schiphol and Düsseldorf Airports for flights arriving between 10 AM and 06 PM on the arrival day and for flights leaving after 10 AM on the departure day.
